Details about the sexual assault of female employees at New York modeling agencies

Male and female models are often subjected to exploitation and sexual violence throughout their careers–they are often objectified, exploited, or worse, assaulted by those in positions of authority.

Rumors about abuse and sexual harassment of female and male models — and the photographers, agents, and others who perpetrated it — have circulated within the fashion world for years.

“In fashion, you could be in a room with six abusers at once. They're all covering each other's backs," explains casting director James Scully. "Unfortunately that's why I had to start calling people out–and will continue to do so if I have to–because that was the only way to break the cycle."

In the wake of the #MeToo movement, modeling management chiefs have come under criminal investigation for allegations of sexual assault dating back to the ’80s and ’90s.

Sara Ziff, the founder and executive director of the Model Alliance, an advocacy group that seeks to raise the working conditions of those in the fashion industry, explains "We are working in a trillion-dollar industry that contributes millions in taxpayer revenue to New York, which is off the backs of the labor of workers who are very vulnerable to sexual abuse."

Thanks in large part to the support of the Model Alliance, and the thousands of women who have come forward with their own stories of sexual harassment and assault under the #MeToo movement, models are finally flipping the power dynamic for a reckoning on their own terms.

How the Adult Survivor Act is giving those women a second chance at justice

Adult abuse survivors will be able to sue their assailants for decades-old attacks under bipartisan legislation signed into law.

The State Assembly overwhelmingly passed the Adult Survivors Act, which enables adult victims, those 18 or older at the time of the alleged abuse, a one-time opportunity to file civil lawsuits in New York, even if any statutes of limitations have run out.

The bill mirrors New York’s Child Victims Act and gives adult survivors a one-year window to file suit.

The elements of the Adult Survivor’s Act include the following:

  • The measure is described as an act of “restorative justice;”
  • It allows victims some level of accountability and recompense; and,
  • It deters individuals and institutions from turning a blind eye in the future.

According to Gov. Kathy Hochul, “To those who thought they got away with a perfect crime, I say to you: Your time is up. Your victims will see you in court.”

State lawmakers lengthened the statutes of limitations for many offenses in 2019–however, those changes did not apply retroactively, which advocates of the Adult Survivors Act said made the bill necessary.

The USA Assistance Team is encouraging adult female survivors of sexual assault at modeling agencies–especially those employed in the 1980s and 1990s–to come forward and get a free, private case evaluation for justice and compensation!
