Victims Suffering from Melioidosis After Contact with Recalled Better Homes and Gardens® Aromatherapy Spray

Melioidosis, also referred to as Whitmore’s disease, is an infectious disease caused by the bacterium Burkholderia pseudomallei.

The bacteria of this disease is found in contaminated soil or liquid, and is spread to humans and animals through direct contact with the contaminated source.

There are various types of melioidosis infections that have local, pulmonary, bloodstream, and disseminated symptoms — all of which are easily confused with other diseases such as tuberculosis or pneumonia.

Some of the more common symptoms of melioidosis include:

  • Cough
  • Chest pain
  • High fever
  • Headache
  • Respiratory distress
  • Abdominal discomfort
  • Joint pain
  • Central nervous system/brain infection

The time between exposure to the emergence of symptoms can range from one day to several years, but is most often two to four weeks.

Victims who have been infected with melioidosis from recalled aromatherapy sprays should seek immediate medical treatment that includes intravenous and/or oral antimicrobial therapies.
