How, where, and to whom the deadliest asbestos exposure damage occurs

Researchers can point to a variety of patterns that emerge for asbestos exposure and the resulting cancer diagnoses. Such exposure occurs primarily in the workplace through direct or indirect exposure to products containing the dangerous chemical.

Workers may also bring asbestos home and cause secondary asbestos exposure among family members. Another source of exposure is naturally occurring deposits of asbestos.

Companies manufactured thousands of products–such as insulation, drywall, ceiling and floor tiles, cement, paint and more–using asbestos fibers. Many pre-1980 U.S. homes and commercial buildings contain products with asbestos.

Construction products can contaminate waterways with asbestos in the groundwater supply–also, traveling through waste water after flooding and other natural disasters.

The most common occupational exposure to asbestos typically occurs at the following job sites:

  • Chemical Plants
  • Metal Works
  • Power Plants
  • Schools
  • Shipyards

Occupations such as drywall tapers, electricians, firefighters, auto mechanics and many other occupations remain at risk of asbestos exposure despite efforts to reduce or eliminate the substance on job sites.

Asbestos: The various health risks caused by extended exposure

No level of asbestos exposure is ever considered safe–as such, most problems arise after years of repeated and long-term exposure to products and job sites containing this deadly carcinogen.

A few of the more common diagnoses resulting from over-exposure to asbestos in products and on job sites include:

  • Mesothelioma. This rare and incurable cancer develops in the lining of the lungs and/or abdomen.
  • Lung cancer. Asbestos-related lung cancers account for around 4% of all lung cancer diagnoses.
  • Ovarian cancer. The International Agency for Research on Cancer (IARC) confirmed that asbestos causes ovarian cancer in 2012.
  • Laryngeal cancer. The National Institutes of Health confirmed that asbestos causes laryngeal cancer in 2006.

Research continues to investigate other diseases that might be caused by asbestos exposure–such as a 2020 study in which some researchers believe asbestos should be listed as a possible risk factor for bile duct cancer.

It may take anywhere from 10 to 70 years after the initial exposure for asbestos-related diseases to develop–while related cancers usually take 20-50 years to develop.

Studies have also drawn a connection between people exposed to asbestos that also smoked as being at greatest risk of developing lung cancer.

The USA Assistance Team believes that victims of a deadly cancer diagnosis after asbestos exposure should have the right to hold organizations fully accountable for compensation and justice.
