A recent report reveals that since January 2021, students and staff at St. Paul’s School have submitted 19 reports of sexual assault and other forms of misconduct through a newly implemented reporting system.

The semi-annual report outlines the various forms of misconduct reported, including one instance of coerced underage sex, four reports of sexual assault, and six cases of sexual activity deemed “non-consensual due to age.”

Additionally, four reports were filed for child abuse or potential child abuse, and two for physical assault or abuse.

These incidents were logged through a new system designed to track a range of issues, from:

  • Academic misconduct;
  • Hazing;
  • Bullying;
  • Harassment;
  • Discrimination; and,
  • Sexual misconduct.

The system captures any event that could compromise student safety or well-being.

The current findings align with patterns in earlier reports that documented 26 reported incidents, many of which were historical.

These ranged from dorm contraband to revelations of sexual abuse brought forth by former students.

The 2019 report recorded 31 incidents, approximately a third of which occurred on the school grounds that year.

The ongoing documentation of such incidents reflects the school’s increased focus on addressing past and present misconduct.

The circumstances of the 19 reports this year differ, and the nature of the allegations highlights a range of concerns.

For instance, in one active case, a student reported potential child abuse involving an off-campus non-student perpetrator.

Are there any other active reports that can help to establish a pattern of abuse?

Another active report came from the Clark House, the school’s health center, where a staff member reported a sexual assault on campus linked to an age disparity between the individuals involved.

In some cases, students were reported by faculty members, while in others, students accused their peers of misconduct.

A notable case involved two students reporting another for a sexual assault related to the age difference.

The reports also include historic cases—incidents occurring in the past but reported after January 18, 2021.

Seven involved non-student offenders, while three involved current or prospective students.

To protect confidentiality, no personally identifiable information was included in the reports.

A 2018 settlement agreement between St. Paul’s School and the New Hampshire Attorney General’s Office following a criminal investigation launched in 2017 into decades-old sexual assault reports at the school.

The investigation included a grand jury review of thousands of documents, which led to the Attorney General's warning that the school could face indictments under the state’s child endangerment laws.

However, the state ultimately opted for a settlement with the school, which required the appointment of an independent compliance overseer to monitor the school’s adherence to updated sexual misconduct policies and to ensure investigations into any new allegations.

Reports also highlighted cases where the school took concrete action.

  1. One example occurred in January when a physical altercation between two students at a sporting event prompted the school to report the incident to the Concord Police Department. The matter was resolved through a process acceptable to all involved parties.
  2. In another case, external investigators were brought in to probe allegations of sexual harassment and intimidation involving a group of students targeting another student. By the time the investigation concluded, the students who could have faced disciplinary action had already withdrawn from the school, avoiding any formal proceedings.

The hope is that these measures deter future misconduct and encourage victims to come forward, confident that their allegations will be taken seriously and addressed accordingly.
